Vent in the cockpit locker

Why would there be a dedicated vent into the cockpit locker?

The grey vent just has a short pipe on the back that terminates in the locker. The engine is vented from another vent in the cockpit (under the aft seat)

She is a Sun Oddy 30

The reason I ask is that I want to fit a stern shower (just cold water despite the UK base) and if that vent isn't required it would be the perfect place to put the unit in.

No hot air heater ....
The fuel tank is in there
There is a hot water tank with imersion heater and calorifier
There is the rest of the junk ... erm I mean spares ... and fenders

I couldn't quite see the need for a vent as there would be insignificant flow as there is nothing to suck or blow. I initially thought it was the engine vent - but having got in the locker (end of season clear out) I traced the pipe - about 1-2 foot long, does rise up to the underside of the decks.

We got the boat mid summer so it is a new toy atm ...

Is it a vent or a drain?
If drain it could be that this locker was designed for kedge anchor and associated gear.
Don't really know but there must be a reason.

Definately not a drain ... the SS outlet on the transom is the gas locker drain.
The locker is deep (no cabin underneath) and has a false floor so any water will drain into the bilge.

I'm wondering if it was the engine intake and a post build modification moved it to under the seat ...

To allow the locker to have gas bottles stored in it? But more likely a drain.

Surely it would be obvious if any gas, equipment or the like vented to there. If not, just fortuitous that you have an vent in a handy position, so use it?

On survey of my boat for "Fire and Safety Certificate" a club requirement I was told that the fuel compartment must be ventilated. In this case an outboard tank. I suggest that the vent is a token gesture at a safety requirement and as such you may or may not want to risk turning it to another purpose. (Nice lookiong boat) regards will

Too high for a gas drain unless there is a separate walled off gas section within the locker. Heaters have there own specific intakes. My guess would be purely for venting of condensation and water vapour, after all, quite a lot of wet and damp stuff gets put in the cockpit lockers, and if it can't vent here, it will probably find it's way into the boat interior, especially if the locker backs onto the heads and a wet locker.
