If you look at the Vendee Globe WWW site it would seem by now that Mike Golding would be in the lead (last update 9.30 am ), but for some reason the site is not updating as frequently as it normally does so one can’t be sure ?

It is incredibly close between the first 3 boats, and amazing achievement. I,ve been watching Conrad Humphries make up 3 or four places after a 2 day enforced stop. Incredible!
Bets anyone?

Re: Vendee, radio 4

he was on the radio this morning. With his technical probs 4 years ago, he describes his attempt this year as unfinished business. Also said it was not lonely as the phone rings a lot...

Re: Vendee, radio 4

Considering he has been over 600 miles behind in this race, this is an incredible performance.

I hope he does it, he seems to be sailing so well for the last month or so.

If he wins, do you think is a better achievement than Ellen's record attempt ?
Assuming she does it too, of course

Re: Vendee, radio 4

too early for bets yet, I am not being cynical just dont want to jink anyones chances as my luck is pretty abysmal at the moment....

Fantastic news that Mike is now in the lead though, especially after his halyard snapping.

His boat speed is fantastic too...

Re: golding/ellen ..or?...

hard to compare, really. Both pretty wild wild stuff.

I suppose that since it's an endurance thing then the actual time taken is sortof mesure of how tough it is. I mean, if anyone found a boat that could do it in a weekend it would cease to be a challenge or achievement, really, like flying an aeroplane.

So, i reckon that in achievemnt terms, the french women at the backof the vendee pack - thousand of miles behind golding in far less-well-funded boats warrant special appreciation. An accident for one of those in the next few weeks will be much more dangerous than the others.

If the choice is either gholding or ellen then i suppose golding by a short head cos it's the second time in the same race for him. I imagine it's a teensy bit easierish for ellen mentally to be caried along having had a lead almost right from the start.
Golding went up the mast this time, so that also puts him rather on the wilder side of arg praps for me anyway.

Not only is his boat speed good there have been many times over the past month where he seems to have been sailing a more direct course than the others.

Sometimes only a few degrees but this has obviously helped over a long period.

It will be interesting to see what his tactics will be if he can get a decent lead.

I think at the moment he is sailing his own race according to the weather but later on when the finish gets nearer.... who knows ?

Imagine trying to cover the bloke behind for 2,000 miles !!!!

Cover tactics

You're right. I think he's gotta build a big lead first before he can think about covering.

Mind you it seems that Bonduelle has been off the pace recently and has chucked away what was once a good lead.

I think PRB is his problem..let's just keep our fingers crossed for him.

Re: Vendee, radio 4

Agree - very difficult desicion if the 2nd and 3rd placed boats go off on different courses chasing different weather systems. I suppose he then either covers the boat thats most likely to get the better weather earlier or just sticks to his guns and sails his own course. Terrible if it all went wrong then - bit of a damned if you do damned if you do n't thing.

Re: Vendee, radio 4

He's only going as fast as he is cos he thinks he's running out of ciggies. If he knew where the extra supplies were hidden he'd be coasting at the back of the fleet!

Don't open the first aid box, Mike.

Re: Vendee, radio 4

he's turned round and stopped now.

or maybe he has craftily turned round and stopped at the very instant that he know the polling will happen? That is pretty sneaky. OR it might be a tack. Or his rudder has busted, dang.

Re: Vendee, radio 4

Mike was 811 Miles behind the leader when he passed Cape of Good Hope!
Awesome performance
