From the start I have been folowing all developments towards this year Vendee Globe. Based in Holland, we do not have any tv fotage on this wonderful event, which is a #$%^-shame. Internet coverage is very good though, a lot of spectacular pictures and videos can be found. Riou, Jourdain, Golding and La Cam are perhaps the top favourites and personally I rate Alex Thomson as a top outsider.

What's your impression so far?

Pretty much agrree with you in terms of favourites. Alex Thomson is the wild card , prepared to take risks and its good to see him towards the front. Makes it interesting for us Brits. Mike Golding is in great form and has already worked his way to third.

Early days yet and when they get down to the Southern Ocean, that'll sort a few people out.

What web cams are you viewing ?

I too am following with great enthusiasm via the Internet from the UK. I think this is the one global race that defines the spirit of ocean competion.

One thing that puzzles me is What does Vendee translate as ????

Happy Viewing

double post.....

Anyway, the site I regulary return to is this one Vendee Globe

Got introduction to all skippers and boats, nice pictures, daily update and amazing videos. Perhaps due to the colours/sponsor tag but I find the Hugo Boss and sharp looking boat. Spectaculair videos can be found on the sponsor's site as well hugo boss

What's the best site for webcams?

Haven't got a clue... French is certainly not one of my strong points..... (Vendre is something like sales/selling/reaping???) Must be something like "Round the world.." ????

Strictly speaking, past participle of vendre - to sell. However, in this case I think it refers to the Vendee, a flat, rather uninteresting area of France, running inland from the North Biscay coast (I think - geography not my strongest point).

There's no coverage here on TV either, probably quite a lot in France though. I've been following the official website which i think is pretty good. I reckon they'll start to spread out a bit more as the days go on and they stop worrying too much about breaking their boats! Mike Golding got to be a firm favourite (hope so) for me but the others are looking good too.

Les Sables d' O'lonne is in the Vendee region of France.

That's where it starts from, presumably finishes there too. So I assume that's how the race gets its name.

It's a bit north of La Rochelle on the West coat of France

I am following Alex Thomson closely too as I think he may have a chance but you never know in this race.
I think however he may push too hard and perhaps break something - hope not.
Mike Golding deserves to win however after events of years ago....
