Back at the end of January Ste7ve pointed out that Velox had disappeared from some, or all, UK, shelves. I think someone pointed out it was still available in some mainland European chandlers. As we are gearing up for another bout of AF and we need to restock with Velox I contacted the local distributor, no reply, the main Oz importer, no reply and Marlin in Italy, no reply. At least they are consistent.

I assume it was too expensive to gain or maintain certification.

As Vyv pointed out this does seem 'odd' as the active ingredient was Zinc Pyrithione and I believe pyrithiones are found naturally in chrysanthemums and marigolds and this may be the ingredient that is used in traditional mosquito coils. It is, or was, commonly found in America as the active ingredients in dandruff shampoos

Zinc Pyrithione has been around for decades and has had a long history used in paints and is maybe returning to popularity with the focus on attempts to remove copper from AFs.

The overall view of people on PBO, my interpretation of comments, was that Velox was the best of a bad bunch - better than anything else but not fantastic - maybe 'adequate'.

There are a number of AFs, at least in America, containing the product and some are listed here:

Its quite a long article (so anyone bored with my threads can move on now).

I have a suspicion Velox had a high solids loading of Zinc Pyrithione, and possibly higher than contained in the paints listed.

I have not yet found any paints in Oz that contain Zinc Pyrithione - but am checking (whether Wattyl stock Sea Voyager and others when I find them).

It merits note - there are some international companies selling paints under the same name worldwide. Because of different environmental laws a paint sold in the UK might not be accepted in Australia (and vice versa) but the same brand name is used - with minor changes in formulation (which may of may not impact performance). Similarly the same formulation may be sold - under different brand names.

If members liked Velox I wondered if anyone might have something to add for the common good
