Veggie diesels!?!?

According to my brother, who may well be winding me up, it is possible to run diesel motors on vegetable oil with a dash of meths; in fact his father in law runs his car on the stuff with no ill effects other than a slight smell of barbeques! If this is true then boat owners can fill the diesel tank with vegetable oil and always be certain of having enough for the frying pan....

There are a number of sites on the net concerning this. Veggie oil can be used instead of diesel provided some additives are included (just as parafin can be). There are people in wales who collect used veggie oil (no cost) filter it, and then use it. However, if you don't declare it and pay an appropriate amount of tax, you will be prosecuted for using it in your vehicle. Using it in a boat is a different matter. The quantities involved to make it economically viable (i.e. mobo use) mean that you will have two problems - getting permission to store such a quantity where you can process it, and then getting it to the boat.

A lot of the sites claim that the diesel runs cleaner under veggie, the downside is that you leave a smell behind like a stale fish and chip shop!!!!!!!

and the point is?

I can see the point of bothering on the road when fuel is 70-80 p a litre.

But on the water when its 27-40p, why bother?

Seems like a lot of hassle for not much point.

Downsides ... and a domestic solution

Current marine diesels are designed for sulphur lubrication. Without the sulphur which isn't in used ex-fish and chip oil they will run till they either glaze or sieze.

But why bother? Red diesel is cheap enough .... at present.

For cars, it' a different matter ... red diesel is better than low-sulphur diesel unless the engines have been designed for low-sulphur diesel ....

.... and the cheapest red diesel is 28-35 seconds central heating oil. It's currently 17.6p a litre for a minimum purchase of 1000 litres. If you are a farmer then you can bulk buy 'agri-diesel' at 7.8p a litre for a minimum of 2,500 litres. It's exactly the same thing.

plus
as i have posted before when this was being talked about, has anyone looked at a chip pan and the jelly like deposit that sits on the edge of the oil where it has oxidised? hot veggie oil and oxygen equal a not very nice deposit that i certainly dont want near my pump or injectors

No expertise on this, but have heard that it's probably OK for a basic diesel engine, but to be avoided for turbos. Apparently you can get vegetarian diesel road fuel in Germany, but mustn't use it on BMW TD models.
