We have a VDO Logic Combi engine monitoring system fitted on our boat, but the dot matrix LCD is failing. I have just got one from Australia that came to light from a previous post c. 2010, but the boards are not compatible and the LCD's different.

If anyone has a Combi lurking on a shelf or in a locker, I would be glad to hear from them, even if it is not working.

I had a complete VDO instrument system with a master Log/depth, two wind instruments and two multifunctions, which although not set up to monitor the engine, were capable of doing so. Sadly as they had the biggest LCD screens, they were the first to fail, with the screens going black. Given the age of these I doubt you will now find one with a good LCD. The Combi probably used the same LCD screen as the wind and depth instruments, but great skill is needed to swap these. When I replaced my VDO instruments I kept one wind instrument canibalised from one with good works and one with a reasonable case and buttons. This is now just beginning to show the LCD blacking out in one corner. I think the last ones were made in the very early 2000's and even the newest are around 15 years old. It might be time to think of installing an up to date system.

Yes, it's old and we have been putting up with it, changing switches, and keeping sellotape over the buttons! The trouble is there is no substitute, and we need to provide for tacho, engine hours, fuel level, oil pressure, water temperature, battery voltage, stop and start. It is not clear where to house them, and even then they would not be alarmed..

I am thinking of programming a Raspberry Pi..
