Please could anyone who has had experience of getting a VAT certificate in Greece post a message or a PM.

A friend who has a boat in Croatia has asked me about VAT in Greece. He would like to sail south to Corfu in the spring and wants to try to smooth the process, with contacts and advice. I said I would try to get him some.

Thanks in anticipation.

I would very strongly advise against trying to pay VAT in Corfu. I had by far and away my most unpleasant experience with officialdom in Corfu when arriving from Croatia. They made the average third-world Bureaucrats look like pussy cats!

If your friend needs to pay EU VAT I suggest he considers Malta. He can sail there via Italy or Corfu as non-EU boats can cruise freely for a limited period before having to cough up the VAT.

Sailed into Corfu this year from Dubrovnik (boat had been there for about 5 years & no paperwork regarding history or age). Owner was seriously concerned about VAT. Customs place in Corfu main harbour simply asked "what flag is it -answer British! What is nationality of owner + crew - answer British! OK don't bother me & go away (said nicely)".
seemed very laid back compared to Croatia.

Lucky you! Therein lies the problem with Greece. You can never be sure what is going to happen. The Port Police have immense power and there are huge variations from place to place and time to time. Give me Croatia any day. They have a system which everyone operates in the same way so you know where you are.
