From February 2024 domestic storage batteries will be 0% VAT rated. Whether this applies to boat batteries, I don't know and as I replaced mine late last year, I don't really care, but it may be worth looking into.

I suspect not as a boat battery looks like a car or golf cart battery and does not look like a domestic battery.

A quick google shows all kinds of Power Wall-type boxes. Easy to say they're purely domestic, but what about a DIYer who buys a set of LiFePO batteries from Alibaba or the like. Will he be able to declare them as being for home use and not have to pay VAT? If so, a live-aboard could reasonably claim it's for his home. Then there's me. Of course it's for domestic use - it's my holiday home...

I'm told that for domestic installations, you need to get the battery installed by a VAT registered installer in order to benefit. If you do it yourself you'll have to pay VAT.

So I presume the same thing will apply to boats, if it applies at all.

If Sea Change is correct - then its a no-no ...

But if any chance - then don't forget AliExpress and others give you an invoice that shows VAT .. maybe can be used to reclaim it ??

I was told this by a solar/battery installer so that's good enough for me.

It's the same situation with solar by the way- VAT free on a house if installed by a VAT registered installer.

Here - we can install ourselves as long as we declare the project and get approval first. Then Latvian Govt issues a discount order etc. against purchase of the gear.

Can you get solar panels VAT free?

I should have explained better ... with the push to go 'green' - we have various subsidies allowed to claim ..

I have as example 3 energy sources in my house :

1. Electricity from town grid - I get a reduction on bill based on Govt payment to Electric Co.
2. LPG - I am told I can claim part payment for the gas I order to fill my 3 cu.m storage tank. So far haven't found the claim site !! Even my Accounts Manager cannot find it ... so must still be in processing !
3. Wood fires - I get a cash payment against the wood I buy in ... even cash payment without invoice - I get a payment !!

Solar - as I say there is a discount scheme when you buy the gear for installation ... plus if you use a professional installer - there is an allowance on that as well. Wind - where allowed can also qualify.

Its not VAT free ... but discounts are near enough.

I imagine you would find that it is the solar panels used for domestic PV systems. Here in oz there have been and perhaps still are government incentives to fit domestic PV but not removal of Goods and Services Tax (VAT) Subsidies are claimed by the installer. (something like 1 in 5 houses in West oz have solar PV systems. That means that inevitably there is a good supply of second hand panels. Not always the most efficient but still good. You ar enot permitted to use s/h panels in domestic PV connected to grid. If you have unlimited space to mount them. They are great. About 180cms by 100cms Almost always 40v open circuit and for domestic PV typically wired 8 in series to produce over 300 volts to a MPPT inverter.
For a 12v system you need an MPPT controller to convert the typically 200w per panel to charge 12v battery. (or better 24v) .
I doubt you could fiddle VAT relief on boat type 20v small panels. ol'will
