Beware, we may be stuck sometimes paying VAT twice after B day. Anyone considered what will happen with particularly large spares/equipment on arrival at foreign airport or when posted? In common with most, I buy what I can in the UK and take it out with me or, with heavier items, bundle them in a box and send via Algarve Express weekly van.

There is a scheme to get VAT repaid on personal exports by getting form stamped at port of exit but that's a pain. No way to get the VAT back on goods personally boxed together and sent to carrier so, VAT will likely be charged again when they arrive in destination country.

Think ahead folks. Hopefully, most of us arriving at destination airport or ferry terminal will be judged tourists and get away with small items in luggage. What made me think about it was a solar controller, delivered to me in UK via Amazon from Germany. If that is spotted at Lisbon airport, could be liable for another €50 import duty and VAT.:(
