I fell in love with Varnol last year while doing up my old Westerly. Sort of stockholm tar smelling wood varnish/oil. I found it superb for restoring old dry wood as well as keeping rubbing strakes bright and shiny.
I now own a gaffer with lots of wood. The main mast has been neglected and has rot and splits to prove it. Following repairs I want to give the mast a treat of Varnol prior to varnishing (Interational Schooner). All very traditional.
Problem is Varnol is no longer made. So undaunted I did a bit of research and now have 1ltr of Kiln Burnt Pine Tar, 1ltr of proper pine turpentine and a ltr of boiled linseed and a tin of Siccative dryer.
What proportions do I need to get close to Varnol and have I missed any ingredients?
