What do I need to put on them to make them shiny again? Is bog standard wood varnish ok? Do I need marine varnish or can I just go to homebase and by the cheap stuff? Many thanks.

First coat 50/50 with white spirit. Sand with 120 grit lightly to de nib. Then about 5 neat coats. Cheapo varnish will be fine.
