I have some wooden oars that have some bare patches through wear and tear.

What do I need to put on them to make them shiny again? Is bog standard wood varnish ok? Do I need marine varnish or can I just go to homebase and by the cheap stuff?

Many thanks.

All the old dead varnish needs to come off, right back to bare wood.

First coat 50/50 with white spirit.

Sand with 120 grit lightly to de nib.

Then about 5 neat coats.

Cheapo varnish will be fine.

And to keep them looking nice, rinse them off inf resh water and stow them inside the boat out of the light in the cabin, not a damp locker.
