What is the general opinion.
I have a few brass hinges I have taken off and brushed to bring up, and now I am ready to varnish. What is the general consensus about varnishing over them to keep them bright.

I use lacquer for my house door handles - buy the automotive touch up for cars as it is a nice clear lacquer and will allow the shine to be visible. Varnish will cover a lot of the brass and hide the bling!

I've tried this but find the varnish doesn't get much grip. On the outside of the boat water gets under the varnish after a while and then it degenerates to a peeling, discoloured mess. This might be overcome by roughening the surface of the brass first - if you don't think that is counter-productive. If you want nice looking brass outside, I think you are stuck with polishing it.
