Varnish

Teak&Holly strip floorboard's are begining to look a tad tired,there are so many product's on the market by various manufacture's, what application would you use.

There is very good 2 pack polyurethane that they use for gymnasium floors. 'acid hardener' way better than International yacht stuff (which is pretty good) Did my tiller with it, lasted 8 years vs 2 years for international

All of them 'cure' better in a good warm place. and you need several coats, each rubbed down with carbide (white wet&dry) paper when cured. The pot of mixed varnish can be kept in swmbo's fridge between coats without it going off.

Last winter I stripped the teak and holly floor with Nitromors Varnish stripper, sanded it down with fine grade (There were marks under the varnish that a previous owners had varnished over). I gave it 6 coats of Ronseal Diamond Hard clear varnish in Satin and it came up a treat and shows no signs of wear after one season. You must varnish it in dry and warm conditions as any dampness will make it go milky.

Yes, much the same as MoodySabre.

I did some repairs to mine and after sanding applied 4 coats of the same Ronseal Diamond hard Clear Satin Varnish. I then masked 3 of the central teak sections in the area below the companionway steps and applied a further generous coat before sprinkling silver sand into it.

I have only had the One seasons use yet but …
Great no problems and the non slip area is a real plus.

I have used this specilaist varnish on two different boats;

It only seems to be available mail order from decorating direct, but they are very good value for lots of painting/varnishing things ypou may need , so well woth an order.

This particular two part varnish dries to a very hard finish and is much cheaper than other two part varnishes available in the chandlery. However only consider doing it iof you can lift the flooring and take it home to do it as the fumes/smell is very stong in a confined space. It dries quite quickly so two coats in a day are quite easily achieved.

This type of varnish is indeed very durable. It uses hydrochloric acid ( cheap, the muriatic acid of old) as one of the parts. The fumes are heavier than air. It is a serious health issue applying it inside a boat, without forced ventilation. Years ago, I varnished a home floor with it, while it froze minus five outside, the reason I kept the windows shut. And ended up with three days in Intensive Care ...

I'd go for the Ronseal if you want a gloss or satin finish, but I always used Deks Olje 1 for mine. excellent non-slip properties, good wearing. I redid it every 5 years or so.
