Varnish the Teak Capping and Grabrails

I am thinking of varishing the teak capping and grabrails on my Sadler 34. At the moment, it is covered (well in places only) with a yukey brown paint like substance. Has anyone got any advice on the preparation of the wood? Should I use a paint stripper? Can I use a mechanical sander? What type and grade of paper? Also any advice on the varnish itself? How long do you think I will get? I was budgeted on 3-5 years. All advice welcome.

Grabrails...

I've always thought that untreated bare teak offers a much better grip for grabrails.

Try using Sikkens Marine Cetol. Easier than varnishing and looks excellent, I prefer natural colouring, though can be bought in darker colours as well. I used it on my last yacht a westerly Tempest and it improved its looks dramatically. After 3 coats it shines like varnish and will not darken as it ages. I am half way through refitting an Albin Vega at present and am most impressed with this product. You still need to prepare the timber as you would before varnishing, but hopefully thats the end of the hard work for many years.
