Varnish Removal

This mess has been made within the last year or so with a stain varnish, type unknown. The background is white melamine (I assume) vintage 1988.

Tips on how to clean the surplus off please.

Chipping and scraping may get some off, what will Nitromors do to the melamine? Any other ideas?

Unlikely anything will damage the melamine. Going to be trial and error to find something that dissolves the stain. Notromors and acetone are worth trying.

If it is melamine, scraping may get all of it off quite easily. It did when I had a similar problem.
