Varifold or Gori propellor

Hi guys, Still under undecided if I get a Gori folding 2 bladed prop or a Varifold for my MUMM 36 raicing boat, fitted to a Yanmar 2GM 20 SD20 saildrive. Waiting for any experience or advice with these props to help conclude the deal.

Know nothing about the varifold. Fitted a Gori this season. Great.

The Gori is a great propeller on a Yanmar SD20 except for corrosion. Never managed to sort the problem and got through 2 before opting for a Kiwiprop which has been fine.

I agree with Savageseadog. Having witnessed corrosion on a Gori prop I opted for a Slipstream stainless steel two blade folder at the beginning of the season and am very pleased with it.

Got two Gori props. Had them on six years. Boat afloat all year round. All ways had shaft anodes fitted. No corrosion at all. Still perfect.

[/ QUOTE ] That's the whole point, your installation is not a saildrive. Your prop is protected with a sizeable anode. A saildrive prop is electrically isolated and is unprotected by the sailrive anode. Some saildrive props have small anodes which go quite quickly. Problem is difficult to resolve but my theory is stray currents through marinas and from shore power pass from the saildrive to the prop. The current is small but the current density is highest at the gear teeth (the blades are geared together) and the prop always fails there. It might also have something to do with work hardening of the bronze which could set up electrolytic cells on moving surfaces (another of my own theories)

Glad to hear that having last year fitted one on a shaft! It came with a huge collar anode which looks good for 5 years.

It appears that saildrives can be prone to prop corrosion, I have heard of problems with a Volvo prop on a saildrive.

A Mumm 36 eh, sweet...

Assuming you dry-sail, then its gotta be a Gori race series prop, close to bugger all drag from these babies.

Goris seem to have a finer taper. My Varifold had major corrosion its second season - had to repair with supermetal

I have a Varifold on my Beneteau 331, love it, no problems whatsoever over the past 2 years.

I must say you can save a lot of money and corrosion worries by fitting a Kiwi prop.
