how is a valise liferaft activated ???? the same as a canister on a lanyard, or do you have to take it out of the bag first and throw, then cut the line /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

just trying to weigh up the pro's and cons of a can or a bag

Mine has a lanyard in a pocket on the outside - tie it on and chuck the whole thing overboard. The valise has velcro round it which 'bursts'.

The decision should revolve around how you are going to store and deploy. A canister on the pushpit saves heaving anything about and a can in a cradle on top is neat too. A valise is much lighter but doesn't really want to live out all the time. There was a long thread on this recently.

On my Avon 6-man valise, there's a flap - held shut by Velcro - under which is sited the attachment line. This is tied to a strongpoint ready for raft deployment.

If you then sling the valise overboard, the jerk on this line activates the inflation process - I hope!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maybe with a valise, and I'm just thinking a bit here, you should just get it out of its storage area prior to entering a risk zone.

So if you normally store it in a locker, at night (say) you pull it out say if going across channel and prop it in the corner of the cockpit ready for use. When you arrive, put it back in the locker.

OK, if I'm talking rubbish, just flame me, just a thought.

You are quite right. On passage our liferaft sits in the cockpit but is stored below at other times.
