Does anyone have any advice on rechargeable handheld vacuum cleaners that are suitable for a boat and run on 12volts? So far I have only managed to find information on a Dirt Devil cleaner that runs off a 3m cable, but the boat is considerably longer than 3m!!!

problem with rechargables is that the batteries die quite quickly and they are expensive to replace. we picked up one with a long lead and a cigarette lighter plug for £8.50 at the co-op in inverness. it sucks far better than a black & decker. it draws 8 amps

We bought a 12v vacum cleaner that is a minature version of an aquavax. It has a lead of about 3mtrs but just extended it and it works very well. Will hold a couple of litres of water, has a filter, three different nozles and a flexible hose.

Though bought in Spain have seen them over here in CARAVAN shops.

We always had a black and decker one. Never picked up much dirt though, made the cushions look a bit tidier, ran on very long lead and plugged into cigarette socket. boat was 40' and we reached everwhere.
Now have a dyson to run off inverter, one of my most cherished items aboard now!!

I have a 12v car one which plugs into a lighter socket, sold in car accessory shops/Halfords or try car boot sales - mine only cost £1.50 including all the tools!

I have a powerful Black and Decker unit. It is only 6 months old so dont know if it is the same type that others have suggested wasnt powerful. Mine is more than adequate. It has plastic pre-filter and a proper pleated bag filter, lots of attachments. I also have cordless unit that has rechargeable batteries. Not very powerful and batteries last about 5 minutes. It then takes about 24 hours to charge up!
