Vacancy at \'Sailing Today\' ....

...just read a press release saying that John Goode no longer works for the company that owns ST.

Shame, he has helmed the ship well and has led the effort to establish the mag as a serious competitor to the IPC fleet. He was also a benefit to yachting journalism - a good sailor who could write well.

Reading between the lines, sounds like publisher trouble to me. Let's see what happens to ST in the doldrums that may now result - precarious, being an independent.

Bit of a worry. The content, particularly with Peter Poland's articles was getting very good. July's edition is a stunner. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To be honest ST is giving far to much space to Peter Poland and his views.

It cannot be good that one man dominates a magazine with his thinking.

I know what you mean. But... He knows his stuff has been there seen it and done it and I think he has some real insight on the yachting market and boat designs. I thought some of his recent stuff on the innovation and variety seen in the French market compared to the dominance of a smaller number of suppliers in the UK market really hit the mark. (Mind you I would think that!). I do accept though that they need some other contributors with balancing views etc.

Shame about John Goode leaving ST. Not only is he a brilliant journalist but he is also a gifted and talented teacher. His articles on boat handling in close quarters are absolutely superb!

Maybe Peter Poland is taking over the magazine

Re: John Goode steps down as editor of \'Sailing Today\'

Yes I'm very sorry to see John Goode step down and I wish him all the best in his future career. Much as I enjoy YM I also like ST and subscribe to both and I think both have improved as a result of the competition between them. The reason for John's decision I believe is down to differences with the publisher and I hope the new editor is allowed to continue the magazine along the same lines.

Regarding Peter Poland, I always enjoy his columns which are informative and a good read, most recently on what makes the Elan 340 a better performer than the Elan 344. The only annoyance is that I almost always find myself agreeing with him!
