The Admiral has decreed that we shall have new mattresses for the V-berth.

We both like a fairly firm bed and don't get on with memory foam as we move a fair bit in our sleep and found that the old mattresses (cut from an Ikea memory foam mattress found in their bargain section because of a torn cover) tried to hold us in the old position, until it got used to the idea of the new one. It's now gone senile and can only remember one position and in that position, hips hit the plywood underneath :(

It would seem that reflex foam would be the stuff to go for, but this is available in medium and firm densities. Can anyone give us an idea just how firm firm is?

We almost never sit there, unless reading in bed, so it won't have to do lots of duty as seat cushions as well.

Lots of suppliers on the internet. Any suggestions as to which to use - or avoid?

I bought replacement foam for some of my cushions from Foam for Comfort http://www.foamforcomfort.co.uk/
They use to advertise in the camping and carvanning magazines long before ebay and all that nonsense was invented.

Original was just some stuff I bought from a high street shop. It proved to be too soft so I replaced the foam in crucial cushions with a firmer grade from FFC.

Don't get stuff that too firm though... it's almost as bad as stuff that is too soft.

BTW an electric carving knife is the tool to cut foam if you do not buy it cut to a template

The foam should be a bit larger all round that the covers to ensure a snug fit. If its not a fight to get it in the covers they will be too loose.

I got mine from a local to me custom manufacturer of foam bedding.

All bases were laminates of different density foams different for lying on of sitting on and the back rests wee again quite a soft density foam.

Find some one who knows of has samples you can try.

My best advice is look at laminates of different density for different applications.
