UV strips on Roller Furling

Many of the classics on the Deben keep their sails wound up round the Wykham Martin gear, but I dont see any noticable UV strip portection.

Now that I have WM gear myself on cream sails, I was wondering how bad UV damage is on sails if left uncovered? It is just a pain taking down the rolled sail when I leave every time.

A sleeve may be a good way to go again N Mussett.

Never thought of a sleeve - good idea. Can hoist it up with a spare halyard?

I think you can get cream UV strip material, or in extremis, a light-weight sail cloth in the same colour will do. I always stow my jib in its bag below. Personally I don't like leaving sails up in harms way. Its only 5 minutes each end of a trip, and leaving it up is just laziness. I didn't mean that to sound too rude, so apologies if it did.

I entirely agree that it is laziness.

I can assure you that I am not lazy on many other aspects of her maintenance, so sometimes I feel I deserve some laziness treats - such as breakfast in bed every now and again.

You can get white or off white UV strips - I know Hood did these for Moody circa 2001.

Saw dark cream UV strip on a Cornish Yawl at Yogaff - looked quite Ok I thought. Used to have a bag on a previous boat (roller reefing). Went up upon spare halyard and laced tight.

Haven't the spare halyard on the Heard (and anyway have to take the 'sprit in to fit in our berth).
