I had the boat booked in, to be lifted out so that the outdrive can be repaired or replaced. So, the day before, i started the engine just to check all was OK, and that i could get to the hoist under my own power, the engine started first turn of the key, but not running on all 4 cylinders, so i gave the throttle a little tweek and Clunk rattlle, rattle, b****y hell now what??? upshot was, i had to be towed round for the lift out(again) so a compression test then followed, 3 cylinders at 135psi (cold engine) 1 at zero, so of with the head again to find that this time a valve seat has dropped !!!!! so this will be my fourth head gasket in 5 months !!!
come on guys you can't say that it's the joys of boating !!I am beginning to feel that I am the unluckiest person on this forum!!!
I seriously regret selling my little Shetland!!!
I only want to go fishing
SOB SOB SOB
B****y boats!!!!

ah! now that feels better.

But you had the head refurb'd a while ago. If the seats were done, which if my memory is correct, you did. Surely the people who carried out this work should be given a stern talking to with words of not more than ttwo syllables.

With the head coming on and off so much in the recent past. I would be inclined to get a new set of head bolts.

I shall be using all my customer service skills and training, and politely pressing home my dismay at the valve seat dropping, whilst quietly tapping the workshop manager on the forehead with said cylinder head!! good point on head bolts though

Now then Julian, you are a tonic for the soul (my soul, that is!!). I have been waiting to get my boat back into the water for 5 weeks now after two outdrive rebuilds, a new tank, a new gimbal bearing, 4 new propellors, 4 new bellows and a partridge in a pear tree!!

I feel better that I'm not alone. I also sold a a 17ft runabout with a Suzuki on it that never gave me a moments trouble....

On a couple of occasions I have been tempted to look at getting myself a Broom 38 or 42, maybe even a nice P415.
When I read missives like yours and as winter draws near I contemplate the joys of not having major bills flowing in. Why every time I see John Stripp we sit and giggle like schoolgirls while we count all the pennies we have now we are boatless. OK! It is true have I still have my 30' launch but she costs nothing to run and doesn't even need anti-fouling because when not in use she sits in the dark on the mud in my boathouse.

The wing nuts were a good idea. Saved me ages with torque wrenches and alike. The I got some of those automatic things you use on your props. Only problem is they undo themselves without you knowing.
