I've started using utile for a few jobs on the boat e.g. a seat at the helm and for slats in the double berth in the forepeak. It's certainly a cheaper option than mahogany and doesn't look as dark as mahogany when varnished. I rather like the look of it. It gives the forepeak on my 56 year old boat a slightly more modern feel to the refit, whilst blending in well with the original mahogany. I think it would also look good with an oiled finish.

I'm thinking about doing a few more exterior jobs with utile but was wondering if anyone has any experience of the durability of this wood? I noticed that Fairlie Restorations have used utile on the deck joinery on Niebla, their recent new build, so I guess they must know something!?

Had all thirteen windows here made from utile by a cabinet maker mate. About 20 years ago. I know there're on dry land, but we get a lot of gales with driving rain, which is worse than sea water for causing rot. No sign of anything like that. The woodstain on the windows themselves is absolutely fine; the sills need to be sanded down now to restore a perfect finish.

Had to break off for a quick meal.

Actually, only the three upstairs sill that face the SW weather need attention, the others are fine.

If it's any guide, I'm having my rubbing strake replaced this week with utile. Haven't decided on finish. Might try the Deks Olje stuff unless anyone can talk me out of it.

Utile is mahogany , so is sapele , meranti and luan (spelling on all 3 could be wrong) . Its used because brazilian mahogany isnt availible . Utile is like sapele ,one of the harder mahoganys but still prone to rot if you dont keep on top of it , but then so is anything .

Good stuff. I had a rudder made of it; was fine when I sold the boat!

Not to be compared for durability with iroko, though.
