UTC Question

Can anyone enlighten me?

I thought that basically UTC had taken over from GMT and that within the normal bounds (say) 07.00 UTC was about the same as 07.00 GMT give or take a couple of nano thingies.

DO THE YANKS DO IT DIFFERENTLY?

Because tonight I was watching that show called “24” and they said “the following takes place between “7pm and 8pm”. Then later proceeded to state that the time was 07.00 UTC.

Are they resetting UTC at noon?

I thought that even the US Navy used "Zulu" time (GMT - UTC)

Can someone please explain it to me.

I've always though that UTC is GMT. Name change as a sop to the French.
I refuse to use UTC. GMT good enough for me imho.

Relationship between GMT and UTC

Plenty of explanation of how they are related on the web, see <A target="_blank" HREF=http://sts.sunyit.edu/timetech/gmt-utc.html>here</A> for example.

They can differ by up to a second, when UTC is adjusted (happens every couple of years or so).

UTC (Co-ordinated Universal Time) is time kept by atomic clocks and should be the same as GMT unless another time zone is mentioned.

So, finally the french have got time co-ordination back in Paris, typical, I will never use the term ... again, it will be GMT and stuff em, remember Trafalgar!

One lives and learns

I always thought they were the same and that UT was used in French tide tables because they couldn't stomach "Greenwich", or perhaps being "Mean".

I now have a new element to take into consideration in my DR.
