I was sitting on the back of my tub watching the sun come up, when in pops the following email from those beastly chaps at SKY

We are glad that you are continuing to enjoy your amazing Sky content while abroad.

For continued access, you will need to watch online content in your home country within the next 7 days, as we need to check that you are still a resident.

I do not watch much TV via SKY Go (last time about a month ago, certainly not while at home in the UK) however the prospect of going home within seven days to keep watching is a bit of a pain (boat in Netherlands). I was in the UK two weeks ago, using the TV so whatever systems they have in place clearly did not pick up on my location.

Does anyone know if this is a Sky TV via internet only issue or does it apply to satellite TV - can they track the location of a SKY box/card?

Many Thanks

I’m a bit confused. I was under the impression you could only watch live TV on Sky Go when you’re in the UK or Ireland unless of course you’re using a VPN. If you’re using a VPN then they won’t know where you are. You’re e mail from Sky suggests you are watching downloaded content and my understanding is you can do that anywhere. Strange. I hope they don’t have some new technology as I’ve been using Sky in Turkey for 15 years and I love this new Sky Q multi room set up.

From what I have gleaned the rules chnged on 1st April and SKY Go is available to all in most of Europe, the caveat appears to be that you have to be resident in the UK.

I am more concerned about watching via satellite.[/QUOTE I wasn’t aware of that and anyway it doesn’t affect me as I’m outside the EU. I rarely use Sky Go also and watch via satellite with the aid of a 5M dish. I got a Q box around 18 months and since then I’m permanently connected to the internet via a VPN router. I never connected the previous Sky + box to the net. I’d say VPN is the way to go.

We are using SkyGo via a vpn here in sunny Vietnam but also used it recently (10 days ago ish) in Sicily without the vpn. The Sky box does still get use at home in the UK though, courtesy of our son, so I’m not sure if that has a bearing on it or not.

Welcome to this forum.

Is it just me❓

Looking at your #6, the link doesn't show but subsequently, I established that to see the link it is necessary to click on 'article' so possibly it would a good idea to amend #6 to reflect this.

Reading the article, scary stuff but I never reveal my real name, age or phone number. They just get an email address and if I am in anyway unsure, the family dog has her identity and an e-mail account, which I use on facebook and elsewhere.

To the best of my knowledge, she has never been hacked or conned and, as she died last year, it is even more unlikely in the future✔️

Yeah lots of scary stuff in the article - written by people with a vested interest in selling VPN subscriptions. Some absolute bullshit in it.
I've set up a vpn on one of the routers in my house to keep my Sky Q box connected and give me full functionality such as Catch Up and On Demand. I can also access Sky Go on my iphone and ipad by using a vpn and disabling location services. I also use the VPN to connect to the bookmaker's sites which do not accept Turkish ip's.
