Using \"old\" diesel

Apologies if this is a duplicate post but don't know if I pressed the right buttons last time.
Could someone help - I have 25 litres of diesel thats been stored (initially on the boat and more recently in the garage) in a poly jerry can since mid last year - is it still ok to use?

Re: Using \"old\" diesel

Its worth decanting it from the can through a course mesh filter first to ensure no bugs have built up a sludge but otherwise no problem

No the diesel is totally worthless, I suggest you give it to me so I can dispose of it for you! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[ QUOTE ]
Whereas petrol can "lose its enthusiasm" when not used, diesel is fine, even when stored for a long time. So use it!

[/ QUOTE ]

You say that diesel is fine even after a long time. When I bought my current boat/"project" 5 years ago I inherited a 60 gallon drum of of the stuff. The previous owner says it's about 15 years old! Its just sitting there a bit in limbo as I'm afraid of using it and I don't fancy paying for its disposal. What do you think? Sorry to hijack your post but it seemed too good an opportunity to miss.

If in doubt - mix it with 'fresh' diesel. 0.25:1 should do the trick.

Make sure you filter it well and all should be fine. Mix it with new diesel if you wish as stated above. If you are still unsure I can dispose of it for you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Using \"old\" diesel

Although it's 15 years old, I would still use it but be cautious. Perhaps by using a mix of 1 part old with 3 parts new and see how it goes.

Also, given the age, I would decant and filter it first to get rid of any sludge.

I am amazed ..... a drum of diesels itting there and not used !!!! If it hasn't been disturbed in any way - it must be the clearest diesel for miles !!

Honest .... if you take a jam-jar full out and its clear - then if really concerned mix it 50 - 50 with new stock .... or take a jerry cans worth down to boat each time before fill up .... etc.
