Can you anyone please help me. I am running Windows XP and I have an Iridium 9505a phone. Previously I had my laptop set up to use the Iridium for occasional downloading of Grib files from Saildocs and it worked fine. I have changed my laptop and I am having difficulty installing the driver for the USB to serial converter that worked fine on the other PC. I have tried using the driver that came with the convertor and I have also tried using downloaded drivers for the Prolific PL2303 from both Prolific and from the link on the Mailasail helpful Iridium set up article. The download seemed to work but when I plugged the convertor in I got "ser2pl.sys needed". I have tried to uninstall the driver but although it doesn't show on the programmes list it still shows on "add or remove programmes"and will not uninstall even when using an uninstaller programme. I have tried to reinstall the download but it will not run and I get the message "Can't copy Information file Failed to Install". I would be really grateful for some advice on this. The set up still works on the old sloooow laptop.

Hmm, i just downloaded the drivers from here --
http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41

and reinstalled them on a win7 machine. No probs, if I plug in an adapter it gets shown straight away in device manager under "ports" .

Same drivers?

Otherwise not sure, though I've heard the USB/serial devices can be a bit hit and miss when it comes to connecting with iridium, i struggled for a while with a different laptop before splashing out on a pcmcia serial card.

I have had problems with my 9505A and USB to serial converters. These converters are not all the same!
Try looking in device manager for a problem there. You may be able to disable or remove a driver which is causing the trouble.

Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 users

On the desktop right-click on My Computer and click Properties or open the Control Panel and double-click the System icon.
In the System Properties window click the Hardware tab.
In the Hardware tab click the Device Manager button.

or

Click Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
In the Control Panel double-click the Systems icon.
In the System Properties window click the Hardware tab.
In the Hardware tab click the Device Manager button.

Otherwise you may find some help here:

Good luck!

Thanks to both for your help. The problem seems to be with the laptop. I can download the drivers from prolific but they won't install. The driver doesn't show up on the Device Manager yet it shows up in Add or Remove programmes and it won't uninstall. Maybe the pcmcia serial card is the way to go but there is a wide range of price choice. Any recommendations would be welcome.
