Hi all,

I have just installed a Digital Yacht AIT2000 class B AIS transponder. This has various outputs, one of which is the USB connection to my PC. The AIT2000 multiplexes the GPS and AIS sentences together into a single NMEA stream. I have confirmed this looking at the raw data on the PC.

So the issue I have is using this combined data feed. I have both Neptune Navigation v7 (I think..the latest anyway) and also Keith Belfield's Chartplotter programme. Keith's programme will only accept AIS and GPS on different COM ports, so won't read this combined stream, and the Neptune claims to be able to do so, but doesn't work in practice and when I analyse the data stream from within the Neptune programme using the logger, it seems to have filtered out the GPS sentences. I am raising this with Neptune.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to resolve the above, or have any suggestions to alternative Nav programmes that would support this combined NMEA stream?

Thanks

Piers

Piers, I have a AIT 2000 connected to a notebook running Open CPN. AIS data is presented live on the chart and postion data keeps all updated, works well. Open CPN is available as freeware here..http://opencpn.org/ocpn/

Thanks Peter. The OpenCPN programme seems to be a popular choice on these forums - maybe time to have a go with it. Which charts do you use with it?

I've used Open CPN for a number of years, being open source it is being developed all the time. I use the downloadable CM93 v2, I believe version 3 is now available, some disagreement as to legallity of them and there is no updating. Visit my Harbour sell a UK set of charts for about £25 accessed from a dongle. I've see them and they look good, I intend to give them a try this year. Others I have spoken to have used other types available with plotters etc but prefere the Open CPN software, further details of suitable chart formats are available at http://opencpn.org/ocpn/chart_formats

Thanks Peter. The charts on the dongle look a good solution. I think I will give that a go. Piers

If you were using linux or a mac I would point you at kplex my nmea-0183 multiplexer program which can split out different sentences and present them on different streams, but from your software choice I'm assuming you're using windows. I'm no windows expert but I think you might be able to achieve what you want with the free-as-in-beer NavMonPC ( NavMonPC ...when are they going to fix URL rendering in this forum???) which I believe can present a filtered input on multiple "virtual" serial ports which you can then attach your plotter program of choice to. I don't use windows so don't guarantee that's a solution, but it's what I would look at first.
