Help needed on priming/staining and varnishing bare plywood superstructure on my little GRP cabin cruiser. Purchased boat two seasons ago. A previous owner had gone mad with a belt sander and then a dreadfull re-varnish. The belt sander had gone right through the varnish and primer exposing blond plywood and then just re-varnished it. Result horrible blond patches. Varnish was in shocking state in anycase so I have just spent a exhausting month removing varnish down to bare wood using hot air gun etc. It looks as if the original primer included a stain and this stain is virtually impossible to remove. If I tried sanding it away to get an even colour then I just go through a ply. I quite like the stain in any case and so its the blond patches that are the pain in the bum. Imagine if you like the wood 80% the colour of a decent cup of tea and the remaining 20% the colour of dirty blond. I want to use a red or brown (colour of Strong tea) Coelan primer and topcoats and my question is:Will the primer tend to cover up these blond patches Y/N? If the result is yes but but not perfect, is their any milage in going over the blond bits again with a small paint brush? Has anyone out there been in this position? If so I would love to hear from them. Remember removing yet more wood to get below the original stain is not an option. Any UK responders to this post may care to include their UK telephone number so that I could have a natter. I attach a picture showing the colour of my boat I want to end up with and if you look carefully see the blond patches. I look forward to some advice and thanks. Peter. Wimborne.
