Using an (unused) 8 year old water filter

Can I solicit opinions as to whether I can use an 8 year old water filter? It's been stored in the garage for 8 (maybe 10!) years with it's blanking caps on. I think it's a Whale charcoal-type one. Do they have shelf lives?

I'd have thought that anything with a shelf life would be marked with a 'use by' date?

Charcoal filters start degrading once they're wet. As long as it's been sealed and dry, then I'd happily use it. I'd imagine lots of filters from chandleries have been sat in dusty store rooms for a while.
