I want to use my SIB fitted with a 2.3hp outboard on a local river and canal. I cannot find any information regarding rules and regulations for such use, I can't believe there aren't any!!
Can anybody help please or advise where I can obtain the necessary information. Thanks

Guess you've first got to find out who administers the water you want to go on, then just register your craft like any other "launch". You'll need proof of insurance of course but no BSS.

Depends on which river or canal.
Choosing the larger waterways within your location posted I suspect British Waterways is (are) the most likely

clicky

The site should direct you to the license fees and how to conduct yourself.

I'd be more helpful if you could state which river and canal

Thanks Trueblue you are correct , main area of activity initially will be the River Severn , Bridgnorth Bewdley Stourport and The Canals around Llangollen and Wrexham, Although we hope to go further afield eventually.

If you haven't already looked, a full license for "Rivers and Canals" will set you back almost £400 (ouch), but if you're canny you can buy an Explorer license for £80.30 which gives you 30 separate days access to any of BW's waters.

But hurry, as BW are thinking of dumping it "lack of demand". Buy one online before the end of March, nominate the starting date and it's valid for a year.

The Severn will be fun as you can keep out of the way of larger boats, but the Llangollen canal is (very) narrow and passing 20 tons of tin can be a bit frightening both for you and the narrowboat!
