Useful anchorages where you are in the lee in the bristol channel

Re: Useful anchorages with lee shores in the bristol channel

In an Easterly you can anchor West of Sully Island and get a bit of shelter. The causeway out to the Island covers at half tide forming a complete breakwater over the bottom half of the tide.

Just to try and kickstart what could be a good thread. The dolphins in Knightstone harbour can be used for an hour or two over HW on spring tides.Ideal for a short sail from Cardiff have lunch in the harbour then nhead back before it dries out.

Can be choppy in a Southerly when the other end of Weston Bay near Brean Down will be sheltered.

I will add another thou everyone prob knows it
North east side of flat holm perfect shelter in a south westerly

Also anchored off penarth pier for lunch today very good holding and shelter from westerly winds

Had a very close look at sully today and saw there may be a bit of shelter from ssw but didnt try it
as well as shelter from nne as graham said

Im sure there must be a few people on here with more knowledge than me

Cmon boys shy or what ?

Off Penarth is good, and I have often used it to wait for the tide - much better than getting stressed with the Barrage, and it saves a lot of time. I have gps'd a pool which is a bit deeper than the area around it, and I can stay afloat at LW well out of the channel.

Porlock Bay is good if there is south in the wind; behind Worm's Head is superb and photogenic, as is Caldey Is; Combe Martin is nice except in northerlies; you can find shelter around Lundy whatever the wind direction, and Clovelly can be useful.

Further down there is Port Quin Bay - a much more convenient alternative to Padstow for passage-making, and one of my favourite spots on that coast.

BTW marinas are not necessary for trips! I have only ever spent 6 nights with my boat on a pontoon other than my own berth, and 5 of those were in Cardiff /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
