Dear forum members
We have a 4hp outboard (2 stroke) with a long shaft that was used as an auxilliary for our first boat.
As it is 'long-shafted', can it be used safely to power a small inflatable tender to access trott moorings, potter about etc?
Thanks
Mark

yes.

Recommend that you dont accelerate really hard with only one small person in the boat sitting aft, as the additional length of the leg will help to raise the bows to a point where the small person might have trouble see forwards! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ] The operative word is "safely" and IMHO the first answer is NO, but as Talbot has pointed out keep revs down, balance the dingy (keep some weight forward and generally don't push it too hard) you should be reasonably OK. so the second answer that comes to mind is YES - but with the above provisos.

It would be a good idea to take it out in some sheltered water and "play" with it to get the feel for what you can and cannot do. If you do not need a long shaft why not flog it and buy a short shaft?

This is starting to sound perverted /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Most outboards are normal/short shaft which become a long shaft by adding an outer casing section and additional pieces on the drive and the gear change. Is it not possible to remove some sections from your outboard to make it more suitable for your use? IMHO. Paul

probably need more than a hacksaw job on the drive shaft......one way or another a swap/even a sell/buy will work out better if you really need to change.
Personally I would stick with it untill one day you will be sitting on teh boats when someone starts thet conversation - "if only I had a long shaft...."
