get one to these, please?

I want to connect a Garmin 12 handheld GPS to our laptop which now has a prog for chartplottering /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

On the other hand, can one now buy a connection of garmin 12 to USB direct?

Totally agree. They work really well (and dont use the flawed prolific software) The leds in the socket also show when data is being sent over the cable!

gave up on these in the end and instead bought a usb gps engine. it only cost about £35, was powered via the usb socket, was 12 chanel which is more than the garmin and worked like a dream. much better than trying to adapt obsolete technology like the 12 IMHO

Be a pal & tell us where you got it from, the cheapest one that I have found is twice that! Also agree with your thinking, as well as anything it also gives some redundancy, if the Garmin goes down, you still have chartplottering as Becky puts it.

Cheers

Thank you very much.

Have just bought one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Know it must be right, it seems to be the same as Talbot's /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also had endlest trouble with usb/serial connection, and had given up on them. I had a requirement for another so decided to try the offering from a company that specialises in USB connectivity --Easysinc-- and they worked like a dream.

The Prolific driver is at fault ...

But recently - I found a site that had a modified Pro Driver .... bingo !! All previous problems evaporated instantly. I will try and find the file if anyone wants it ...

The only Serial to USB converter that I have reservations about now is the Belkin ...

To another that advises getting rid of the Garmin 12 ... why ? If it works - it's fine, It's certainly more versatile than a USB mouse GPS. The 12 will work with or without the PC .... the Mouse GPS will not .... and is therefore a restricted item. You also still have a display on the 12 that can be seen outside ... the PC is inside ... GPS Mouse has nothing except a couple of leds ....

Whoops - duff memory. It was £42.97 (confirmed from my credit card bill) and came from a web site called gpsforless. Couldnt find it on their site tonight but it isnt the easiest site to find your way around. The model is a Zycast G 949 USB

But thats not the choice. The choice is between using the old GPS and a serial to usb lead, or spending a small amount more and having a second GPS that plugs straight in. The Garmin is still there as a back up and the usb gps has several advantages - its powered by the PC (the Garmin eats batteries), its small and easy to site, there is definitely no serial mouse problem, its a much more modern GPS chip set with a greater sensitivity - and I remember how big the difference was when I switched from a GPS12 to a Gamin 76. And its magnetic so it sticks to any handy bit of steelwork.

But you pays your money and makes your choice.................................... Up to you :-)

I think you mean serial to USB? The PC components shop in an alleyway just off Gosport high street sells these. You mostly walk past this shop when heading from the Haslar car park to the main high street bank.

They also stock a mini multimeter for a silly low price, something like £5.

Also tried to commect my garmin 48 to laptop gave up in the enf a purchased GPS mouse

Did search on E-bay for "GPS Mouse" found 103 hits from all over the world at all sortes of prices

I got a gps mouse, less wires does'nt need its own power and reception through the cabin window is fantastic .. also adds redundancy to the nav equipment.

That'll be a Prolific Type.
Not advisable.
I'tll probably be OK (just) for feeding strongish NMEA signals into the laptop
but no good for sending anything out to something like an autopilot.
Get a Keyspan or Easysync or the CPC four port one.

Steve.
