Hello All,

I recently purchased a yacht in Ireland. I would like to bring it to the UK to have some work done in the boatyard. I have found the temporary admissions process but I was wondering if there is a process for importing to have work done on your boat. Some countries waive VAT on the goods and services that are to be exported from the country on visiting yachts. Does anyone have knowledge if there is such a scheme in the UK. If not is it okay to have work done under the temporary admissions.

Ships do this all the time so I have no doubt that similar processes could be applied to a non UK yacht. Life would be easier if you have the vessel reflagged to the USA flag before arrival. There should also be procedures for reclaiming VAT for items supplied to the yacht during this visit.

There is no reason why you cannot have work dine under TA, but you will pay UK VAT on the work as any ordinary UK customer. If you want to avoid paying VAT on the work then you must find a yard that operates an HMRC sanctioned VAT free system.

This may help www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-to-delay-or-pay-less-duty-on-goods-you-import-to-process-or-repair I am not au fait with the details but I don't think an individual can get the relief bit the firm providing the service or carrying out the work.

Registration is irrelevant. Presumably the boat is EU VAT paid or non VAT paid anywhere. That relief is intended for goods that would otherwise be liable to pay UK VAT if imported. The same boat could also make use of TA if the owner is non resident in the UK but would not be able to reclaim VAT unless the work was done by a UK firm that could apply for the relief. The previous relief on VAT for goods taken out of the UK by an individual is no longer available. So if you bought the saails the supplier would have to export them to you, ir be part if work qualifying for the relief in the link above.
