West Marine have taken over (Spin = Made an alliance with!) Boat U.S. the 'spin' continues, in the interest of boaters. In reality Boat U.S prices were quickly hiked to those of West Marine. Anyone planning a visit seek out Boaters World, they are on the net. Prices are 15-40 % below the new 'Alliance'.

Anyone 'appalled' by Downtown Los Angeles, the delightful central square is full of 'squatters', likewise, in some places the tents are two deep on the sidewalk.
Take yourself off to Venice or Huntington Harbour they are both half hour drive away and a boaters dream.

Actually a close examination of prices will show that BW's prices are not 15-40% lower...in fact they are pretty much in line with everyone else's.... What you may have seen was "sale or clearance pricing". I recently reviewed one of their sale flyers...it was really no different than anyone elses.

I am an Assistant Manager for BoatUS, and we have not had our prices raised to match West Marine's. In fact some of our prices have gone down as opposed to up.

Inasmuch as the "purchase" of BoatUS by West will give West a total of 320 stores nationwide.....they still have less than 33% of the marine market. There are other vendors out there, many others. By the way, there is no "spin" to it. As it was reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission and to the news media.... they bought the BoatUS Products Group for $72,000,000.00. Pure and simple.

I think if one exercises careful shopping practices and does their research you can get what you need at advantageous prices by looking at all of the vendors.

Reality is the cause of all stress!!
Edited by Morgan33OI on 31/01/2003 03:13 (server time).

I always go to West Marine because
a) the staff are much more knowledgable than the others
b) Boat US store here usually has goods strewn all over the place and the staff haven't a clue about much. That's if they bother to speak to you.
But--- if you order on-line and get what you want, I s'pose it doesn't matter
