A young person loosely related to me has a chance of spending 2yrs in the USA - "furthering his education"/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Choice is UCLA at Beverley Hills or University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Cost will be slightly less at U of M due to being offered some teaching work.
Has anyone out there any thoughts on the relative esteem that these institutions are held in - sensible question ?
Then, what do you think of the cities/areas in general - which would you choose and why - touristy question ?

Thanks.

University of Michigan is a great place. My relation went there and became a Doctor. The area of Ann Arbor is lovely and quaint, especially for USA. It is a very highly rated University in America. I actually visited there and also saw the student accomodation ! It would be a better choice, in my opinion than Beverley Hills. If he goes there, I wish him luck. He would have a wonderful time and great experience.

Hi

UCLA is held in high regard as an institution, its a first class university, but im not sure that unless you like the LA lifestyle then it may become a tad shallow, on saying that there are some great things to experience but its flash falseness that can appeal to begin with can wear thin. I studied for a while out there an enjoyed it at University.

Dont know michigan whatsoever

Since one of the HM's minions(since fired) stopped him for speeding in the Bag in an 8'6" dinghy when he was 8, he's hated all things to do with Devon in general and boats in particular. So, Plymouth's out of the question/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Unfortunately, he wrote in his defence, that he had no way of knowing how fast he was going and was just trying to catch up with his Dad /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

Just seen your message - I'd recommend U of M. Spent 8 weeks there on a " Mexican" MBA program a few years back.
Univ highly rated, accomm excellent, Ann Arbour a nice place to be (but not in winter).

Appropos of absolutely nothing, I read somewhere that U of M was famous in the sixties and seventies for the local bylaws and law guardians being very tolerant of 'mind-altering substances, students for the use of'. I have have no idea if this still true, or whether it is good or bad, but it probably seemed good at the time...groovy baby, check out those pink elephants.....

cheers,
david
