In "The Motor Ship" Sept 05 an article states that the "Aegis" was the 1st ship to be authorised in May 2005 for safe navigation using only an electronic navigation system. The US Navy expect all their boats to be paperless by 2009.

For me this raises 2 interesting questions.

1. Will some US Captains/ Navigation officers keep some paper charts hidden away just in case!

2. Will their Digital Charts be more accurate than Navionics Gold that showed me recently plowing through miles of solid granite cliffs along the river Trieux this year. Trust the French to move those cliffs just to confuse me - or did they do it to confuse the US Navy?
