220R or 220 ohm power resistor 20 + watts used/new or whatever for my Rayburn boiler which has packed up.

For an emergency you can make one with a domestic lightbulb or two. A 250W lightbulb will draw about one amp at 250V, so its resistance will be about 250 ohms. Two 120W lightbulbs in parallel will do about the same. The resistance of the filament will be a lot higher when it's white hot that it is when it's cold, so you may need to experiment. Sounds to me like your original resistor was going to be expected to take a reasonable current, as it's rated at 20W which means a maximum of about 0.3 amps. My guess is that a 250W lightbulb would glow very feebly at that, and it would have a resistance in the right ballpark.

Of course I might not know what I'm talking about, so you should exercise caution - especially in matters electrical/domestic/gas, where you might not legally be able to do your own repairs anyway.

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

Hi
I would have done that but the resistor sets the airflow into the burner, if it wasn't pretty much spot on it would blow smoke or not fire at all. I would have done it if I was absolutely desperate. I had thought about stripping the toater down! I have a log burner fortunately so we're sat round it which is OK except the rest of the house is freezing.
Thanks anyway and Happy Christmas.

Have you got an old electric single bar fire and a ohm meter if so you can easily make one.probably strip the burnt out one and wind on that former.wind on with a space between, seal in place with something like polyfilla, let dry . try charity shop for a heater or R/S components when things get back to normal. 220ohm resistor 25watts stock no. 157-594

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

Re my post electric fire no good would need to make a bl--dy big resistor in physical size ,to get 220ohms !! too much wine too much port, still the part no. is ok!!

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to get one from RS components. Christmas is over tomorrow /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I actually thought Wednesday was a bank holiday.
All the best for the New Year

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

For 220 ohm 10 watt. you can use 2x 440 ohm (470) in paralell. or 4x 880 ohm 5watt in paralell (or nearest available)
or 2X 110 ohm in series or 4X 50 ohm in series. there are lots of options to get what you want. olewill
PS light globes change resistance dramatically with temperature so if it is not fully lit then the resistance will be a lot lower than calculated.

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

Have to ask yourself why a 220 ohm 20 Watt resistor has burned. Replace it by all means, but look for a short downstream in the fan. Perhaps fan jammed by fluff/dirt and no longer rotating so stalled and shorting out the resistor?

Buy 2 resistors from RS just in case...

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

Arrived on this one a bit late ..... but RS is probably your best bet. There are several electronic/electrical component suppliers that will deal direct with the public. Untill a few years ago, they were all "trade only", so you had to get your local TV repair man to order stuff for you, unless you could find a "Tandy" or similar. Now you can visit online catalogues and pay by credit card from the likes of RS, Farnell, Rapid, CPC and Maplin. All probably similar in prices, but RS/Farnell will carry the widest stock. Also good for mechanical bits, gears, bearings, nuts & bolts (including SS), etc. etc.

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

Again thanks to all who responded. I am well aware of the potential pitfall of the fan being siezed or just stiff. Funnily enough in the Rayburn book there is a section devoted to replacing these resistors, which makes me think it's a common event. I'm going up to 50W from the original 25W anyway.

Re: Urgent Need a 220 Ohm 20 watt plus Power Resistance Pref Near Ches

50W will last a little longer, no doubt about it

Stall current of about an amp means you'd need >250W to survive it but space may be a problem hence the clear replacement instructions...
