Does anyone know of a yard in Portsmouth harbour or nearby with a cherry picker that can be uses with boat in the water ? . Many thanks.

Shepherds at Cowes have one, I believe, though I've not seen it myself. Dunno if that counts as nearby enough?

I'm assuming you need to get to the top of the mast but can not.

You could put your boat into Gosport Boat Yard and use their crane to get up to the top of your mast in a bosuns chair.

Alternative is to moor alongside someone else’s boat with a taller mast and go up it, when at your mast-head height pull the mast towards you with a line (easy if you have a smaller boat) or get a load of people on your boat to heel it towards you. I have done this with ease on a friends Trapper.

Give Paul Carey a call, he drives all sorts of cranes and is a very able rigger. Tel 07749 829539 usually Swanwick based but works all over Solent region.

My forestay halyard snapshackle has come undone and now sits patiently for me to retrieve. I was going to go into the Camber at low tide and sort it but didn't.

Hardway sailing club has a crane like contraption on their pontoon and a member will operate it for you (in a bosun chair) for £20 towards club funds and is what I'll probably do next weekend.

Problem with cherrypicker is having somewhere parkable and being able to reach the boat.

I believe the one in Cowes is on the end of the jetty or pontoon.

I was wrong about the yard though, for anyone reading this in future. It was Lallows, next door to Shepherds.

Sorted. Lallows it is on Saturday. Absolutely fabulous response everyone - thank you so much for your help. FYI took main and spinnaker halyards down to wash leaving mouse lines in place. Tried hoisting halyards yesterday to find tape on mouse lines fouling at pulleys. Tried pulling both ways and also smaller dia halyards - same results. The only thing I can think has happened is mouse lines have fallen off pulleys - very odd that it happened to both but will see on Saturday. Thanks again.
