Urgent advice sought

I've just looked at a Hustler 35 today - possibly to buy. It looks good but I don't know much about these boats.

Any advice and personal experience of these boats will be much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Classic fin and skeg design from Holman & Pye, dating (I think) from the early 1970s, although individual boats may be later than that. Originally a racer, built to an early version of the IOR, providing it has been looked after it would now be a 'conservative' cruiser, just about capable of handling anything.

Unless the sail plan has been altered it will have a relatively big genoa (hard work) and small mainsail. In common with most designs of that era it will also roll impressively going downwind in a seaway. As compensation it will go upwind in comfort when modern boats would be loosening your fillings.

Probably moulded by Tyler, but might have been finished by anybody, though Landamoores or Tuckers would be likely

Judging from other postings - I thought it might be you who'd reply. Thanks very much.

Have you ever sailed in one - if so would you recommend it. I got the background info from the salesman - it was the actual experience I was after.

Would this be a good blue water cruiser/liveaboard boat?

Thanks again

Sorry, no.

I've sailed the Hustler 25.5 (same generation) the Hustler 31 (previous generation) and the Hustler 32 (next generation) but never the 35.

My guess is that it would make an excellent bluewater boat, but might be a bit cramped as a long-term liveaboard unless you're into 'cramped'. That generation were good on seakeeping but short on interior volume. Of course, a lot will depend on who built it and to what layout - things were more flexible then than now!

Think it depends on the individual definition of cramped.
The previous owner of our Halcyon 27 lived on board for nearly 10 years, including two tran-atlantics.

To them 35 foot must have seemed palatial.
