Upgrading to a chart plotter

Thats ok if you have the chart sticks - otherwise the current UK offer including UK chart is still better value for money. If I went to USA now I'd probably have a look at the CP300 or 500 though! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm a bit late replying to this so I'm sending you a PM. We have an RN300 at the chart table and a C70 in the cockpit. The RN supplies GPS data to the C70 and the RN also acts as a very useful repeater below decks for ST60 instruments (log, depth, wind). Our ST6001 autohelm is also connected and can be controlled by the C70 which we find useful.

The C70 has the same screen resolution as the C80 even though it is slightly smaller so save yourself some money! C screens will overlay AIS data on your Navionics Gold Chart (cost from £250 for receiver and suitable VHF splitter). You may not want radar or a fishfinder now but maybe you will in future.

I would strongly recommend fitting a waterproof, sunlight viewable plotter in the cockpit - ours is in the bulkhead where it is easy to see and you can fiddle with it sitting down under the sprayhood. Perhaps you could mount it on a fold-out board in the companionway so it is usable either above or below decks.

Note that you can transfer your waypoints automatically from the RN to the C screen (or vice versa) but only if they are connected using NMEA and not Seatalk (though the active waypoint will be displayed on the RN via Seatalk). Something to check out if you have loads of waypoints.

Hope this helps.
