Upgrading ICC upto 10m to ICC over 10m........economically?

I have been running 20-31ft boats for over 30 years using some of them in Europe under the power boat level 2 obtained ICC.
But we are now looking at keeping a boat in the med, probably France and the likely contenders are in the 10 to 11m range.
A quick look on the internet turns up boat schools offerring courses or assesments in the £500 to £1000 range which seems alot just to be able to drive a boat 3 or 4 ft longer than I am used to.
Any ideas on a more economical way of doing this?

I think you can do just the assesment on its own (ie without the course) if you already have the experience etc, these guys below seem to be saying that the assessment on its own is around £200

Cut out the middle person and brexit proof it and further enjoy a nice week scoping a prospective cruising area .
Go straight to French Permit De Mer .

Interesting, my ICC (originally issued mid 90's) does not say anything about boat lengths just Coastal Waters sail and power craft?

You can do a direct assessment for the ICC with a RYA school. The icc sail does not have a size restriction but the power does. Www.portsmouthmarinetraining.co.uk can do it as 1 day of own boat tuition for £250, or on there school boats for a bit more.

The old icc did not distinguish between <10m and >10m. I also have one of these old icc's

I thought it was 10 years, but yes they do, but all you have to do is pay a nominal fee (something like £25) to renew it, and you just get back the same 'type' of ICC, but with a new expiry date.

Thanks for the replies.
I will investigate the assessment only route as well as the French Permit option.....however I may not have to!!
Prompted by the other posts I have dug out what old certificates that I can find.
1) A very plain (looks like I knocked it up myself..(I didn't)) cert from 1996 confirming that I successfully completed the ICC test....no catagories or size mentioned.
2) A Powerboat level 2 cert from 2011. It looks the bussiness and no mention of lengths. It was a replacement issued by the RYA for one I had in the late 90's but lost it. I have relied on it for recent trips to France in our 25fter. Don't recall having to produce it though other than to rent a 17ft sports boat once.
3) An ICC from 2006 (expired 2011 so yes, 5 years) that has power up to 10m and power up to 24m confirmed.

According to the RYA web site It would appear that I can use item 3) to make a renewal application which will automatically have my old catagories included. Doesn't mention if the previous cert has to be current.
I will give it a go and see what happens.

If it makes it easier, the French permit no longer has a test at the end of the course, and of course English courses are available. While there is no limit on boat size, the permit will only allow you to go six miles off shore

Just to wrap this thread up, new ICC received yesterday with no 10m restriction and my newly passed Inland Waterway catagory added also. I just sent in my original 1996 ICC cert and the old expired ICC as stated previously so all good.
