Upgrade Winches to Self Tailing

Hello

I've got a Lewmar 30 winch that I'd like to be self tailing.... do I have to replace the winch or is it possible to upgrade?

New winch required, and the fixing holes are different. Same PCD but differ centres. Have you tried WINCHERS?

I wanted to do the same last year and spoke to Lewmar who said that there was not upgrade available.

Winchers work within their limitations. they'll grip the sheet if you've got the right number of turns on the winch, but they need a hand to get the loose end off the winch.

They're a helluva lot cheaper than chucking out a pair of perfectly serviceable winches. but they aren't a substitute for a proper self-tailer. I'm happy with mine, but if I had to change the winches, I'd try quite hard to afford self-tailers.

It seems incredible that there is no upgrade from Lewmar. Guess i'd better start saving my pennies.

If you look at the construction of Standard winches and Self-Tailing winches the reasons why no conversion kit is available is pretty clear.

A conversion kit would essentially contain every component of a Self-Tailer minus the pawls and springs!

In the end I opted for the winchers, much cheaper than 6 new winches

If you do replace with self-tailers you won't regret it. I changed my Lewmar 24s this year for Lewmar 30 STs and wish I'd done it years ago.
