A month or so ago, there was a thread about which SIM to use for getting online overseas.
For the last 2 months, I've been using my UK 3 SIM in a Huawei E586 in Italy. Basically, it works, and does provide access at the usual UK rates. In general, we've managed to get online wherever we've been (Sardinia, Sicily, Aeolians, Calabria). The performance is adequate for email, weather forecasts and browsing, but not for listening to the BBC and therefore, though we don't use it, probably not adequate for Skype.
The call rates are higher than UK, but much lower than usual roaming.
Make sure you set your device to allow roaming without query. Otherwise, you have to confirm that you really, really want to connect each time, and this interaction doesn't work on a Nexus.
You top up online exactly as you would in the UK.
