Thanks for your input with regards to my stuck outdrive in the up position.

Not a relay problem, released the hydrolic pressure and the leg went down. Reconnect and the leg comes up and stays up again. Told I need a new trim pump looks like around £305 plus vat.

Can thes pumps not be overhauled or is it uneconomical to do? Leg is a dp on kad 43 2003 vintage.

The leg will only rise if the pump runs to "push" it up. The fact that the leg rises indicates that the pump is working as the legs don't float and gravity will keep it down. I think you have an electrical fault here. The pumps if they are anything like the older one I have only have two wires and the relays swap the direction of the feed to drive it in two directions. There are also a couple of valves in there too if memory serves but its unusual for these to go wrong so my money is still on an elec problem. I assume that the pump runs as soon as you swith the ignition on and then keeps going as the leg reaches the top of the travel.

the pump is definitely working one way,why its not going other can be a couple of things including the pump itself or actual switch on dash, broken wire, reverse polarity relay.try with an auto electrican a live wire direct to the pump on both sides of pump but put a fuse in your temporary live wire and b careful.few weeks ago friend of mines switch went kaput.

I had this problem after a rough trip to Brighton. Water had entered the control switch and was shorting out the connections so it would alway rise. The switch is not meant to be taken apart and broke as I attempted to see how it worked. It was apparent water had been running down the loom and into the switch for some time as there was a fair amount of corrosion present. Switch replaced and wires re-routed so any water finding its way behind the dash couldn't track in to the switch. Was never a problem again. From memory the switch was around the £60 mark.

How do you know it is not a relay problem? it is the relay that switches the voltage supply to the pump and it is obvious that the up supply is getting through because the leg is going up.
On the pump there are 2 relays, one for up and one for down. I would remove them, check the terminals to see if they are still there - they suffer with corrosion and then clean them. Put back together and try system, if problem still there swop over relays, if it changes the situation then it's one of the relays.
As Cataldo states you could check the motor/pump assy by using a temp fused supply directly to the pump cables (blue/white and green/white). A safer method that would check the relays and their wiring would be to input a 12v supply (lower current required) to pin 86 on either of the up/down relays - the blue cable goes to the down relay and the green goes to the up relay. If this works start looking at the selector switches, wiring and a clean/check of the by-pass and lift stop relays, these are usually located near the throttle control unit.
Best of luck

It sounds like the pump itself is OK if it works one way already as you have two cables going to the motor from the relays. One blue , one green if I remember.
The way it works is that one becomes + and the other - to trim up, and the relays swap the polarity to reverse the motors/pumps direction to trim down. The fact it works one way eliminates the pump itself, it definitely sounds like the relays are the problem, you need to check that they are working and switching over from + to - depending on which way you are trimming, but they should always work in opposition.
Check that you get a signal from the trim switch to both of them when you press 'Down' to eliminate the switch and harness, and you should find that there is a live and earth available at the terminals of the two cables from the pump.

Are you coming down this weekend. I may be down at the marina as the weather is looking as though its picked up a bit. It depends on if my fuel filter bits arrive in time whether I come or not but I have PMd you my mobile number. Give me a call and if I am there, I'll come and have a look at it with you if you want. Its not going to be a huge problem in my view and should be easy to sort out.

Cheers
