Posted a few days ago for help starting a lazy yanmar 1GM ,had all the ingredients diesal, air and compression but it still would not start .Tried all suggestions (thanks for them) bleeding fuel , heating air intake etc. but still wouldn't start until i invested £3.99 in a can of easystart .

Think it nearly gave the engine a heart attack started within 5 seconds and hasn't looked back .Wouldn't recommend it for every start but it definitly shook off the winter blues. (think the engine scared not to start in case i use it again)

Cheers everyone hope someone else finds this helpful.

I'm glad to hear you succeeded. Mine started (after 4 months layup) today with only a little bit of whingeing, about 3rd go on the button and it woke up, singing 'is it spring, is it, is it?'

Easy Start not recommended for diesel engines. The high compression ratio can lead to ignition way too early in the cycle with a risk of serious damage to the engine.
Dangerous to the operator if used with engines with glowplugs in the induction manifold.

Also has no lubricating properties like diesel oil.

Any views on advantages of using WD40

[/ QUOTE ] I was going to say "no idea" but I thought I'd do Google or two to see if I could find any relevant info that could be padded out into an answer and I found This

What ever happened to Kygas which was used for starting diesels many moons ago. I remember using it on hand cranked Enfield H02 engines in my youth in the RN. Mind you we didnt have gloe plugs then either.

glad to know you've got it started. dont want to be an old misery (or more of one) but the 1gm should start easily without, so you do have a problem of some sort.

We had a problem starting our 1gm10 and after a lot of work it was found to be the common problem with the exhaust port and water outlet had corroded and formed one outlet, new cylinder head needed.
But it all started with the engine being difficult to start over quite a few months.

Rebuilt my YM GM10 (and starter motor)

but it didn't solve the non-starting problem. We eventually had enough compression air and fuel .... but it still wouldn't start.

It was trawling the web that I found a series of sites that referred to a) making sure that all the connections between the battery and the starter motor were pristine (and kept pristine) and that all the return connections were also pristine and kept so .... and that the starter key current (probably corroded) should be bypassed by putting in a 20A automotive relay next to the starter motor.... See the following URL:

That page solved my problems - My YM GM10 now starts 1st time again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

EEEzy-Start (ether) is not a good thing because it makes the ether/fuel mixture ignite before the exact timing mark as specified.
