A couple of weeks ago, we were approaching Boveney lock heading downstream, when we noticed a Broom dithering about in the weir area, so proceeded towards the lock cut as usual.
At the last minute, the boat suddenly powered up, cut across our bows without any eye contact, and headed for the upstream end of the moorings.
I attempted to pass him to take some bollards in the correct place at the lock end of the fairly generous pontoons, while his crew stood by ready to deploy lines, and he carried on at snails pace down towards the lock. I was slightly confused by his actions, and carried on past him, when he stuck his head out of his upper helm and asked me what my problem was, to which I replied in no uncertain (******** ******) terms that it was his poor helming skills and enlarged his vocabulary somewhat.
Now this was a relatively large Broom, with a generous crew, and was acting totally out of character for these usually well helmed vessels, but he cut me up quite badly and was the aggressor in initial verbal terms, because you could have moored at least eight boats up in front of the portion of pontoon he was aiming at. The two boats accompanying us also went straight past him, which might give you an idea of what appalling boating skills he was displaying.
I'm not going to embarrass him with a Boat name, but he was poor even by rental standards. It wasn't 'Brooming Marvellous' by any standards...oops...
Just what is the River becoming?.... :disgust:
