In a region that normally has very variation in water levels, there are now warnings of unusual conditions:

Warning: Storm surge

Friday at 13:00 until Saturday at 10:00.

Category 3: Storm surge between 1.4 and 1.8 m above normal water level DVR

F8 on avg. with F10 gusts.

It's going to require a lot of mooring line attention for those boats that haven't been lifted out (yet).

We are currently running about 50 - 60cms above seasonal average - driven by the strong winds ... storm force odd days. We have no tides in Baltic - water level depends on pressure and wind direction. Plus on the river - what rainfall upriver.

I have problem with my pontoons at present as the level is so high - my access sections are at risk ... have to tend each day. Will be interesting once level drops.

Being in Denmark it is aiming at us:

The strong easterly winds mean that especially in the western part of the Baltic Sea and the southern part of the Little Belt, a large amount of water will be pushed onto the coasts from the Gulf of Bothnia.

Our marina has the highest protection classification, but the water level will affect us.
Some floating pontoons but the majority of berths are fixed, between poles.

A normal, calm day:

Previous incident after the wind came down - pics of the coming will be shared later:

Its usual for us to have strong winds this time of year - but this year has been far stronger ... with us suffering storm force for days just a week ago.

Winds are going to change to have easterly in them which will cause our water levels to reduce - but they will still remain abnormally high ... with westerly coming back later ..

and for my location ?

"We cant give flood warnings for this address"
A half decent spring and tad of low/high pressure elsewhere will get water into our High St.

Years ago - I was going to buy a house in Emsworth .... then I saw some old reports of the flooding ....

House was along the side of one of the inner harbours.

Some of the flood levels in the Baltic are remarkable, at least to those of us who only see it in summer conditions. There is a flood marker in Swinoujscie on the old harbour office at the top of the steps to the main door which must, from memory, be at shoulder level above the quayside, and the island of Usedom can be almost totally covered.

I don't think there's a river in eastern Norfolk or Suffolk that doesn't have some sort of flood alerts or warning due to storm Babet, added to that, the Broads are on flood alert for sea level flooding. The combination is going to be interesting...

Many places in the world have worse weather than Denmark.

This time however it was a "1 in a 100-year" incident. Some damage, but most areas prepared themselves so no major catastrophes.

Despite early warnings some still ignored it and have to live with the consequences.
Even boat owners, which I find odd.

I drove home early from work yesterday on some fairly aquatic Suffolk roads. At one point the trusty old Transit had a bow wave coming OVER the bonnet! Saw a BMW stopped in middle of a 40cm deep section. I should imagine on a modern rolling ‘poota like that it’s a write off.

Common in Latvia is to buy cars from German Auctions .... saves quite a bit against buying local.

Some years ago - I bought a batch of cars from Germany for company .... couple of Passats ... couple of Golfs ... and an Opel.

One Passat needed short motor within first year of use. Other Passat suffered electrical gremlins.
One Golf had to have a new section of wiring loom. Other Golf basically was set for visit to service for similar wiring problems - but was luckily stolen before went in ... Insurance paid out. No it was not organised ... black Golfs were targets for Russian market ..
The Opel was fine.... but had it checked anyway.

We were told that our VW's were most likely salvaged from the floods that hit Germany a while before ... large number of cars were supposed to be scrapped - but had got back on the market .....

That's getting close to the wading depth of my Range Rover.
We left Scotland on Tuesday, the captain warned of force 6 winds at about 22:00, we hardly felt a thing, just the occasional shudder as a wave broke over the bow. Today we have 60km/h winds forecast but should be dry for the rest of the afternoon.
