Hi all - I am having my mast taken down to replace all the standing rigging.

It is a new boat to me, and I was wondering what jobs and checks I should
do to the mast and masthead fittings while she is down. Any suggestions
welcome.

She has a non working wind instrument, but I am loathed to
spend much on fixing it as she has already cast me an arm and a leg. I
have never had one before so probably wont miss it.

It may just be spittle in the tubes. there is a valve at the bottom you can drain it off with.

On a more serious note (boom boom) I check that the sheaves and their bearings are in good nick as although they may spin well enough without load, the tension on a halyard may be enough to seize them.

If all the standing rigging is being done, there won't be much left to do except:

Check/change bulbs & lenses in masthead tri-colour/anchor light if you have one (or put one up there if you haven't).

Get the rigger to fit a demountable inner forestay for use with a number 3 and a storm jib

Put a radar scanner on the mast if you plan all-electric boating.

Put a radar reflector on the mast if you don't have one (see last YM for best buy)

If you've any external halyards you'd like to make internal, cut entry and exit slots.

Give it all a polish or a paint.

Check the mast heel and step for corrosion and rectify if necc.

Thoroughly clean and lube the slot. Take the opportunity to remove, inspect and replace as necessary any internal halyards. Fit spreader boots if you want them.

Thoroughly check the mast for localised corrosion (near spreader bracket and other fittings not easily accessible with mast up) and remedy as required.

Thanks for all the suggestions - Much appreciated.

I will ge a quote for a demountable inner forestay, any ideas what a reasonable quote might be - are we talking 100s?
